THERAPEUTIC YOUTH SUPPORT PROGRAMME
For many children and young people, formal Therapeutic assessment and/or intervention is not appropriate or desired, and we recognise that a more creative and flexible approach is beneficial. Our Therapeutic Youth Support Programme aims to reach those children and young people who are struggling with many aspects of life, and for whom traditional approaches just haven't worked.

Who might be suitable?
Our Programme is typically directed towards young people from the ages of 7 to 25 who have experienced early trauma within their lives, and thus, have difficulty connecting to others and feel generally unsafe throughout everyday life. We also support young people who may have underlying neuro-developmental difficulties which are impacting on their education, family and social life.
Our Therapeutic Youth Practitioners have all completed the Level 5 Diploma in Trauma Informed Schools and Communities with TIS-UK and are trained in supporting young people who have / may have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) - we are proudly endorsed by FASD South-west. We carefully consider every referral received and encourage you to contact us for discussion if you have any questions.
We are registered as an Approved Provider of community-based, out of school alternative education within Cornwall.

We are also registered with AQA under their Unit Award Scheme (UAS), which enables us to support young people to engage with learning and skill development in creative ways, and to have their achievements formally recognised. This offers young people an opportunity to really embed success in their lives and can be a strong foundation to the repair of very low self-esteem.

What does a session look like?
One session lasts 3 hours and is normally offered weekly, 1-1, with a Therapeutic Youth Practitioner and young person. Initial sessions focus on getting to know the young person’s preferences and communication style, as well as developing a strong therapeutic rapport. Once goals for our involvement have emerged (examples may include: supporting a young person to leave the house; reducing their anxiety when out and about; building their confidence; increasing motivation for and engagement with learning etc), creative and fun activities that align with the goals are offered each session. These may include structured activities such as paddleboard / surf lessons etc, and unstructured activities such as visits to the beach, metal detecting, skateboarding etc (the list is endless!). Sessions will always include refreshments, with a focus on supporting young people to consider healthy choices and managing money.

We set out a clear care plan at the start of our involvement and this is reviewed termly. We ask that our services are contracted for a minimum of 12 weeks to enable the therapeutic relationship to develop, however if it is clear that the intervention is not suitable, we will inform you of this at the earliest opportunity.
